The Virginian-Pilot/Daily Press -- an award-winning, multi-platform news operation with a growing audience -- seeks a digital savvy sports writer who can break news and write engaging features on a variety of beats. Our staff enthusiastically covers high school, college and professional sports and the outdoors in Hampton Roads and beyond.
We are passionate about what we do here and are committed to both serving readers and helping our journalists develop new skills.
What you will do:
- We’re one of the largest news operations in Virginia, with coverage from Richmond to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. That’s a big audience — looking for both statewide and hyperlocal coverage
- Our high school sports site - 757Teamz.com - boasts a robust fanbase with more than 100,000 followers on Twitter, and we're looking for a forward-thinking reporter who can help us continue that momentum and also contribute to our other social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok
- Cover a large area including the world’s largest Navy base, many cities and miles of beaches in southeast Virginia. The six cities in our core coverage area include some with large and diverse populations, and sprawling suburbs that reach into rural areas
What you will bring:
- You will have strong news judgment, a collaborative approach and a desire to get the story swiftly and accurately
- You know how to build a beat through strong sourcing and understand the need to not only write stories about the games and the athletes, but about the trends and topics that matter
- You appreciate the depth and variety Hampton Roads sports offers readers, from professional, college and high school sports in the area to the vast outdoors and recreational activities. This includes everything from quick hits to breaking news to features and explanatory stories
- You must be able to thrive in our fast-paced operation and capable of producing a variety of content: photos and videos, tweets, short updates for web, and print stories with deep context
- A college degree is required
- At least two years’ experience in daily journalism is preferred
